Black mold in closet—remove ourselves or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our son's bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the main bathroom. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and I'm really worried about his allergies acting up. What is the most effective and safe way to remove this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt DIY removal. Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and then use a hapticide spray designed for mould to prevent regrowth. The key is addressing the moisture source—this is likely condensation from the AC or a hidden plumbing leak from the adjacent bathroom.

Given Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, mould regrowth is very common if the underlying dampness isn't resolved. You must identify if this is due to a lack of ventilation, a cold bridge in the wall, or a leak. For a child’s room with existing allergies, and because the mould is growing on a structural element (the wall) and not just a surface, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water that DIY methods often miss. If the mould returns after your cleaning attempt, or you find more behind stored items, call a certified remediation company. Look for providers whose process is based on a lab-verified diagnosis, not just visible cleaning.
