Black mold in closet: safe DIY cleanup or hire pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation in there made it worse. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or is this a job for a professional company in Dubai?

The black, speckled patches in your closet corner are a classic sign of condensation and high humidity, a very common issue in Dubai, especially in stagnant areas like closets. The safest approach depends entirely on the size of the affected area.

For a small patch (under one square foot/30cm x 30cm), a careful DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask, safety glasses, and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect. Dry the area immediately and completely with a fan. The critical step is fixing the source of moisture; improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar, using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside, or ensuring your AC is effectively dehumidifying the bedroom.

If the area is larger, has a musty odour, or has spread to the other side of the wall (e.g., from a bathroom), this is a job for a professional. Disturbing large colonies can aerosolize a high volume of spores. Professionals use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. A certified inspector can also perform lab testing to identify the mold species, which dictates the precise remediation protocol, especially important if household members have respiratory sensitivities. In many cases, the root cause requires assessment of hidden condensation or a minor leak.
