Black mold in closet: treat myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles on my leather bags and shoes, and it’s definitely worse since the weather got more humid last month. I’m in a Marina high-rise and I’m worried it’s spreading from inside the walls. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back, and should I be calling my building management about it?

Black mold on leather in a closet is a classic sign of high humidity and condensation, especially in Marina where humid sea air meets cold air-conditioned walls. The pattern you describe strongly suggests the issue is inside the apartment, not necessarily spreading from within the walls. The cold exterior wall creates a surface where moisture from the humid air condenses, providing the perfect environment for mold.

For a DIY approach, first move all affected items to a dry, well-ventilated area. Clean non-porous surfaces like the closet walls with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. For your leather goods, wipe them down with a dedicated leather cleaner and conditioner; this removes spores and helps protect them. Crucially, you must address the humidity. Use a portable dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier bag inside the closet. Ensure the closet isn't overpacked, as air needs to circulate. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically.

You should absolutely inform building management. Under Dubai regulations, the building owner is responsible for the structural integrity of the exterior walls and common areas. Document the issue with clear photos and a written description. Request they inspect the building's external sealants and cladding for any breaches that could be allowing moisture ingress, which is a common issue in high-rises. They are also obligated to address any leaks from adjacent apartments.

If the mold reappears quickly after thorough cleaning and humidity control, or if you notice a persistent musty odor or visible growth on the walls themselves, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden condensation points or leaks that aren't obvious, and lab testing can confirm the mold type to guide the most effective remediation strategy.
