Black mold in closet, urgent inspection needed or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. I'm worried it's gotten worse since the recent humidity, but it's not a huge patch yet. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold inspection, or is this something we can handle ourselves for now?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior villa wall in Jumeirah is a common issue directly linked to our climate. The high humidity, combined with temperature differences between the air-conditioned room and the warm outside wall, creates perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. A dehumidifier or constant AC use is critical to prevent immediate recurrence. However, if the speckles return quickly, if there’s a musty odor, or if the drywall feels soft or damp, the moisture source is likely ongoing and requires professional diagnosis. An inspection is strongly recommended to identify the root cause, which could be a tiny plumbing leak, insufficient insulation in the wall, or condensation from an AC duct. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can’t see. In many cases, simply wiping the surface is not a permanent solution without addressing the underlying moisture. Since the problem is on an exterior wall and has appeared with humidity, a professional assessment can determine the extent and provide a targeted remediation plan. |
