Black mold in closet: urgent professional needed or DIY bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all this humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. I'm worried it's spreading but I'm not sure how urgent this is. Should I be calling a professional company immediately, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach?

Given the UAE's high humidity and that it's on an exterior wall, this is likely a condensation issue, not just surface mold. Bleach is a temporary fix that doesn't address the moisture source and can be hazardous in enclosed spaces.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or dedicated mold remover solution, not bleach. However, since it's behind items and spreading, a professional inspection is wise. They can identify if the wall's insulation is compromised or if there's a hidden leak, which is common with exterior walls here due to thermal bridging from constant AC use. DIY cleaning often misses the root cause, leading to quick regrowth.

A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source. If the mold is widespread or has penetrated porous materials like drywall, professional remediation is necessary to safely remove contaminated materials and apply antimicrobial treatments, followed by fixing the underlying humidity or insulation flaw to prevent recurrence.
