Black mold in closet - what's the first step in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of fuzzy black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. This is an interior wall, and it’s been especially humid lately despite the AC running constantly. I’m worried it’s black mold and that it might be spreading inside the wall. What’s the first thing I should do to get this properly tested and removed in Dubai?

Based on your description, the first step is to immediately cease any DIY attempts to clean or disturb the mold. Disturbing the colony can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the risk of inhalation and spreading the contamination throughout the property.

Given the location on an interior wall and the high humidity you've noted, this is a strong indicator of a potential moisture issue within the wall cavity, possibly from a slow pipe leak, condensation from the AC ductwork, or capillary action from the slab. The constant AC use in Dubai's climate can create significant condensation if units are not properly maintained or if the room's humidity isn't adequately controlled.

Your priority is a professional inspection. In the UAE, mold assessment and remediation should be conducted by companies adhering to international standards like IICRC S520. A certified inspector will conduct a visual assessment, use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the hidden source of moisture, and perform air and surface sampling to accurately identify the species (e.g., Stachybotrys chartarum, Cladosporium, etc.) and the spore count in the air. This data is critical for developing a safe and effective remediation protocol.

For a proper assessment and a remediation plan tailored to the specific conditions of your Dubai home, I strongly recommend contacting the specialists at Saniservice.
