Black mold in closet with pregnant wife: urgent professional help?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the closet is always colder than the rest of the room. My wife is pregnant and I'm starting to get worried about the air quality. How urgently do we need to get this professionally treated, or is this something we can handle ourselves with a bleach solution this weekend?

Given the pregnancy and visible black mold growth, professional assessment is recommended within the next week. The priority is identifying the moisture source and the mold type to properly assess risk.

The constant cold from the interior wall suggests a condensation issue, which is common here due to the high outdoor humidity meeting cooled indoor surfaces. This creates a perfect environment for mold. Simply wiping it with bleach addresses the visible spot but not the underlying moisture problem, so the mold will almost certainly return.

For a pregnant household, the recommended approach is a professional inspection. They will use a moisture meter to find the condensation source and often recommend an air sample or tape lift test sent to a microbiology lab to identify the species. This data is crucial for understanding any specific health risks and for planning the correct remediation method, which may involve addressing the wall's insulation or improving ventilation.

Until it's assessed, keep the closet door open to improve air circulation and consider using a portable dehumidifier in the room to help reduce ambient moisture levels.
