Black mold in damp bedroom corner: DIY or call professinal?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's an interior wall and we're in an older building in Bur Dubai. The AC vent is right above it and it always feels damp in that corner. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Black mold spreading on an interior wall in a damp corner is a common issue in older Bur Dubai buildings, primarily driven by condensation from year-round AC use and high ambient humidity. The damp feeling confirms a moisture problem that must be addressed for any solution to last.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the surface with a diluted detergent solution, then follow with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide spray. Dry the area completely with a fan. However, this only addresses surface mold and will not work if the moisture source remains or if the mold has penetrated the porous wall material. Given the location behind furniture and the persistent dampness, the wall’s internal structure may be affected. The constant thermal bridge between the cold AC vent above and the humid room air creates ideal conditions for hidden growth. DIY methods often fail here because they cannot address the root condensation issue or assess penetration depth. Professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will use a moisture meter to quantify dampness within the wall and often recommend an air or surface sample sent to a microbiology lab to confirm the mold type. Remediation typically involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions. Crucially, they will identify and correct the moisture source, which may involve improving insulation around the AC ductwork or addressing room ventilation to prevent recurrence. |
