Black mold in damp bedroom: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, dusty-looking spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right above the window, and the room has felt really damp ever since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago. What's the safest and most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

Black mold in a bedroom corner is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by condensation where the cold AC wall meets the humid outdoor air. This is a thermal bridging point, and the black spots are likely Cladosporium or another common species, though only a lab culture can confirm the type.

For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. First, identify and address the moisture source—this is critical. Wipe condensation from the AC unit and window daily. Mix a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water, with proper ventilation) and scrub the area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. A dehumidifier in the room can help maintain lower humidity levels.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. In the UAE's climate, hidden mold within wall cavities or AC ducts is a frequent problem that DIY cannot address. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source and will perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For rental properties, DEWA regulations often hold the building owner responsible for addressing structural leaks that cause such dampness.
