Black mold in damp closet: DIY clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. I'm really worried about it spreading. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately?

Call your building maintenance immediately. In Dubai, this is likely a leak or condensation issue from the AC system or external wall, and the building is responsible for fixing the root cause. The dampness you feel indicates an active moisture source that must be addressed first.

For a small patch under 1 square foot, you can clean the surface yourself with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and monitor it. However, DIY cleaning is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't resolved.

The constant high humidity here, combined with cool AC walls, creates perfect conditions for mold. The fact it's on an external wall and damp suggests a possible insulation or condensation issue that maintenance needs to investigate. They should check the AC drain line, insulation, and external sealing.

If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and the exact moisture source. A lab test can confirm the type and guide the safest remediation approach, especially since it's in your bedroom.
