Black mold in damp closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

That damp patch behind winter clothes is a classic Dubai issue. The exterior wall is likely colder than your AC-cooled room, causing condensation and creating a perfect habitat for mold. The priority is to stop the moisture source.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can DIY. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, lightly scrub the area, and let it dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface color and doesn't address the root moisture. Move stored items away from exterior walls to improve air circulation.

However, given the wall feels damp and the mold is on an exterior surface, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The dampness suggests a potential issue beyond simple condensation, such as a small leak in the building envelope or compromised waterproofing—common challenges in our climate. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of water intrusion, which is critical for a permanent fix. Without addressing the root cause, the mold will almost certainly return.

In many cases, remediation involves not just cleaning the visible mold but also repairing the underlying defect and ensuring the area is dried to a standard that prevents recurrence. For peace of mind and a guaranteed solution, calling a professional to diagnose the moisture source is the most effective path.
