Black mold in Dubai AC villa: clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and we just found some black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa, which is always cold from the AC. I'm worried it's mold but don't know if I'm overreacting to a little bit of dirt. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on your description of the situation, I would strongly advise against cleaning this yourself and recommend you call a professional inspection company immediately. The presence of persistent respiratory symptoms in your children coupled with visible microbial growth in a consistently cold, air-conditioned space is a significant red flag.

The black speckles in your Jumeirah villa's closet are highly indicative of mold, likely fueled by condensation from the AC unit. The Dubai climate creates a perfect storm for mold: high external humidity meets cold interior surfaces from year-round air conditioning, leading to condensation and microbial growth within wall cavities and hidden spaces. What you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; the underlying colony within the wall or the HVAC system itself is frequently much larger.

Using bleach is an ineffective and potentially dangerous solution for a porous surface like drywall or plaster. It only bleaches the surface pigment and does not address the root cause or remove the hyphae (root structure) growing within the material. It can also exacerbate the problem by adding moisture.

A certified professional inspection is crucial. We use tools like borescopes to see inside walls and cavity walls, moisture meters to quantify water content, and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden condensation points that are invisible to the naked eye. Air and surface sampling can then identify the specific species present, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol, especially with health symptoms involved. This scientific approach ensures the problem is solved at its source, safeguarding your family's health and your property's integrity.
