Black mold in Dubai apartment - how to test and treat?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it feels damp to the touch. It's an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. I'm really worried it's mold and might be spreading inside the wall. What's the best way to get this professionally tested and treated here in Dubai?

That damp feeling and visible spots are classic signs of a mold issue, very common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use causing condensation. An interior wall in JLT suggests a possible leak from a pipe within the building's structure or condensation buildup, not just surface humidity.
For proper testing, you need two things: a moisture meter to detect water inside the wall and an air or surface sample sent to a microbiology lab for genus/species identification. This is critical, as the treatment protocol for common Cladosporium is different than for more problematic types. In Dubai, any reputable inspector should be able to take these samples and provide a lab report; avoid those who offer treatment without this diagnostic step. Treatment depends on the lab results and the extent of the intrusion. For a small, contained area, a professional may clean it with antimicrobial agents and apply a sealant. If the moisture meter shows significant saturation inside the wall, the drywall may need to be carefully removed to address the source and prevent spread. The absolute priority is finding and stopping the moisture source—cleaning without doing this guarantees it will return. Given this is on an interior wall and feels damp, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the hidden damage. Look for providers who emphasize diagnostics and can explain Dubai Municipality's guidelines for indoor environmental quality. |
