Black mold in Dubai apartment: professional needed or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Marina apartment. It’s been so humid lately and I think it’s been growing there for a while, but we only moved the heavy furniture today. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a Marina apartment is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can work. However, for a larger area, persistent growth, or because of health symptoms like coughing, professional assessment is strongly advised.
Bleach is not recommended on porous surfaces like drywall or wood, as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots, often causing regrowth. Vinegar can be more effective but may not address the underlying moisture problem. The priority is identifying and fixing the source of the moisture, which is likely condensation from the AC or a hidden leak. Given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is the safest choice. They can identify the mold species, locate the exact moisture source, and contain the area during removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your apartment. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies use methods like HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments, followed by verification testing to ensure the problem is resolved and the air is safe, which is critical when children are affected. |
