Black mold in Dubai bathroom: professional cost or DIY bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black mold spots spreading in the corner where the shower is. It’s behind the toilet and seems to be creeping up the wall. I’m worried it’s gotten into the grout and behind the tiles. What’s the typical cost range to get this professionally treated here, and is it a complete rip-off to try and handle it myself with bleach?

Professional remediation for a bathroom mold issue like yours typically involves more than surface cleaning. Since the mold is spreading and you suspect it's behind the tiles, the cost is driven by the need for containment, removal of affected materials like grout or drywall, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence. For a localized problem in a villa, expect pricing to reflect the labor-intensive process of proper demolition and disposal.

DIY bleach is a common but ineffective approach here. Bleach only bleaches the visible surface mold and does not kill the roots penetrating porous grout or drywall. It also introduces excess moisture, which can actually feed the mold growth behind the tiles. In Dubai's high humidity, this often leads to the mold returning worse within weeks.

Given the description—black spots spreading and creeping up the wall—this indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from a leaking pipe or chronic condensation from your AC system. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the hidden water source; treating the symptom without fixing the cause is futile. Reputable companies use moisture meters and borescopes to assess damage behind walls without unnecessary demolition.

The final cost for a proper fix will depend entirely on the extent of the hidden damage. You should request an onsite assessment to get an accurate scope of work, which is the only way to receive a meaningful quote.
