Black mold in Dubai bedroom closet: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our shoes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and we’re in an older building in Deira. I’m really worried it’s been there a while and we didn’t see it. What’s the best way to clean this ourselves, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

Good afternoon. That's a very common issue we see in older buildings in Deira, especially on exterior walls. The combination of high humidity and potential thermal bridging in the construction creates a perfect environment for mold.

Given that it's black-colored mold (which could be Stachybotrys, a concerning type, or one of many other common black molds), location on an exterior wall, and the fact it's been hidden for a potential period, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Here's why:

Firstly, simply wiping it with bleach or vinegar is a superficial fix. It may remove the visible stain but will not address the moisture source or the hyphae (root structure) growing within the wall. The mold will almost certainly return. More critically, disturbing it without proper containment and PPE can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your closet and bedroom, posing a health risk.

In the UAE, there are no specific homeowner regulations for mold, but professional remediation companies like ours follow IICRC S520 standards, which is the global benchmark. This involves containment, negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, and proper disposal to prevent cross-contamination.

For a situation like yours, the correct course is a professional inspection. We would use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source (could be a small leak, condensation from AC ducts, or penetrating dampness) and take air samples to identify the spore types and concentration. This data dictates the precise remediation protocol.

My professional recommendation is to avoid disturbing the area and call for an assessment immediately. We can determine the extent and provide a safe, guaranteed solution.
