Black mold in Dubai bedroom closet: remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the shoe rack. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have exploded. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and causing health issues. What is the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

Small patches of surface mold on non-porous materials can often be managed with careful DIY. For a closet corner, first move everything out and clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and warm water. Dry it thoroughly. Then, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold removal cleaner. The key is to address the moisture source; in a closet, this is often poor air circulation. Leave the closet empty and the door open with a fan running for a few days to ensure it's completely dry.

However, the rapid appearance you describe, especially behind furniture against an exterior wall, suggests a possible condensation issue or even a hidden leak within the wall cavity. In Dubai's climate, this is a common catalyst. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or wood, or if it covers an area larger than roughly one square meter, professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY attempts on larger infestations can disturb spores and spread the problem throughout your home.

A professional inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes borescopes, can identify the true moisture source—whether it's condensation, an AC drip line leak, or seepage from outside. Remediation then focuses on fixing that source first, containing the area, removing affected materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. For health assurance, post-remediation verification (clearance testing) by an independent lab is a standard industry practice here to confirm the space is truly resolved.
