Black mold in Dubai bedroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet, and now we’ve found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate behind the wardrobe. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and if so, what’s a rough cost I should expect for a job this size?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a recurring AC leak, a growing patch of black mold, and its location behind furniture—this is not a situation for DIY remediation. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during the summer months, creates the perfect environment for mold to proliferate rapidly, and what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg.

Using bleach is highly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous materials like carpet and drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it can release harmful biocides into the air. A dehumidifier is an excellent preventive tool but will not address an existing, established colony.

Professionally, this requires a multi-step process. First, the AC leak must be identified and repaired to eliminate the moisture source. The affected carpet, underlay, and potentially the wall backing will need to be removed and disposed of safely. The area then requires specialized antimicrobial treatment and HEPA vacuuming to eradicate all spores. Finally, the area must be dried to a specific moisture content to prevent regrowth.

For a localized patch of this size, you can expect a professional remediation cost to start from approximately AED 1,500 to AED 3,000, depending on the extent of the hidden damage. This is a prudent investment given the potential health risks and property damage.

I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional for an inspection.
