Black mold in Dubai closet: DIY or contact building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It’s been super humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. What’s the best way to deal with this myself, or should I contact my building management in Dubai Marina immediately?

Based on your description of black, speckled spots spreading in a closet with high humidity and a struggling AC unit, you are very likely dealing with a mold colony, potentially Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or more commonly Cladosporium or Aspergillus. The recent high humidity in Dubai, combined with a confined space and potential condensation from an overworked AC, creates the perfect environment for proliferation.

Your first action should be to contact your building management in Dubai Marina immediately. Per Dubai Municipality regulations, building owners and facility management companies are primarily responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of the building and addressing issues like water infiltration and faulty AC systems that lead to mold. They should dispatch their maintenance team to inspect and rectify the source of the moisture, which is the critical first step. Do not attempt a DIY cleaning until the moisture source is identified and fixed, as the mold will simply return.

For anything beyond a very small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), a professional inspection is strongly advised. We at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint hidden humidity sources and conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. Improper cleaning can aerosolize toxins and spread the contamination throughout your apartment.

Given the spread you've described, this is a case for professionals. We are experts in mold remediation specific to the UAE's climate and building standards. For immediate consultation and testing, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
