Black mold in Dubai closet from humidity: dangerous? How to remove?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing in the corner of our bedroom closet, right on the wall facing the window. It’s been getting worse ever since the humidity spiked last week. Is this dangerous black mold and what’s the best way to get rid of it properly in this Dubai climate?

Black mold is a general term for several species, and not all are highly toxic, but any mold growth in your home should be treated seriously due to potential health risks. The location you describe—a closet on an exterior wall—is a classic spot for condensation in Dubai's climate. The temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the humid exterior wall creates a perfect environment for mold. It is very likely related to the recent humidity spike.

For a small, isolated patch (under roughly one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can force spores into the air. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely. Use a dehumidifier or a fan to ensure it is moisture-free; this is the most critical step to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, if the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a musty smell or experience allergy-like symptoms (congestion, headaches), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the root cause could be a hidden condensation issue within the wall cavity. A proper inspection will identify the mold species and the exact moisture source, which is essential for a permanent solution. In Dubai, remediation should always include correcting the underlying humidity problem, often through improved ventilation or dehumidification, to align with the long-term challenges of the local climate.
