Black mold in Dubai closet; how to clean and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of these black, powdery spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where our winter clothes are stored. I think it started after we had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago and the room never felt completely dry. I'm really worried it's black mold and that it's ruined our stuff. What's the best way to clean this safely and who should I call in Dubai to check if it's spread behind the walls?

Black mold in a Dubai closet is a serious concern, but the black, powdery spots are often Cladosporium or sooty mold, not necessarily the infamous Stachybotrys (toxic black mold). The recent humid spell is the likely cause, as high humidity and stagnant air in closets create a perfect breeding ground, especially when the room’s AC isn't effectively dehumidifying the space.
For a small, surface-level area, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with one part water or a teaspoon of baking soda in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Dispose of the cloth immediately. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores into the air. However, given its location in a closet with stored fabrics and the potential for moisture to have penetrated the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the root moisture problem could be inside the wall due to condensation from the AC or a minor leak. In Dubai, look for a certified mold inspector with a microbiology lab. They should use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to detect hidden dampness and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the exact species and spore count. This is critical to assess the health risk and plan proper remediation. Reputable companies in the UAE will provide a detailed report with verifiable lab results from an accredited facility. For remediation, ensure they follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold removal. Focus on fixing the humidity source—this often means adjusting your AC settings for better dehumidification or using a standalone dehumidifier in that room. |
