Black mold in Dubai closet: landlord or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a bunch of black spots that won’t wipe off, and my clothes have started to smell a bit damp. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, but it’s definitely getting worse, especially since the weather has been so humid. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely, and is this something I should report to my landlord in Dubai, or just handle myself?

Based on your description of persistent black spots and a damp smell worsening with humidity, this is highly indicative of active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning creating significant temperature differentials and condensation on cooler surfaces, like exterior walls.

This is not a simple DIY cleaning task. Attempting to wipe it away without proper protocols will disturb and aerosolize the spores, potentially spreading the contamination and exacerbating health risks. Over-the-counter sprays are ineffective against established colonies and do not address the underlying moisture source.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations and standard tenancy contracts, the structural integrity of the property, including water ingress and moisture issues leading to mold, is the landlord's responsibility. You should formally report this to your landlord or property management company immediately. Document the issue with clear photographs and a written notice, as they are obligated to investigate and rectify the root cause, which is likely a hidden leak or insufficient insulation in the exterior wall.

For safe and effective remediation, professional assessment is critical. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and conduct air and surface sampling to determine the mold species and concentration. The remediation process involves containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure complete removal, not just surface cleaning.
