Black mold in Dubai Marina: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but we only spotted it today after shifting some storage boxes. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should we call our building management in Dubai Marina immediately?

The humid Dubai climate, especially in coastal areas like Dubai Marina, creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and in closets where air circulation is poor. For a small patch (under one square meter) that you've just discovered, DIY is possible if you address the moisture source.

First, identify why it's damp. It's likely condensation from the AC or a small leak. Move everything away from the wall and dry the area completely with a fan. Clean the mold with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, DIY is only a surface fix if the moisture issue persists.

Given the mold was hidden and the room has felt damp, the underlying cause could be more serious, like a leak within the wall or an AC drain line issue. In such cases, calling building management is the correct step. Dubai's rental regulations often hold the property owner responsible for structural maintenance and repairs that lead to mold. They should send a technician to investigate the source of the moisture.

If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and the extent of the problem, as hidden growth inside walls is common here. For renters, documenting the issue and communicating with management is your first action.
