Black mold in Dubai: urgent professional help or DIY cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been there for at least a couple of weeks, but I'm worried because my allergies have been worse than usual lately. Given Dubai's humidity, is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this week, or is it something I can safely clean myself this weekend?

Black speckles in a closet corner are likely mold, and Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for it. Since your allergies have worsened, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the species and source—often a hidden condensation leak from an AC duct or pipe in the wall.

For a small patch under 1 square foot, a DIY approach may be possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage paint.

However, if the mold returns within days, the moisture source isn't resolved. This is when professional remediation is necessary. They use containment procedures and industrial air scrubbers to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during removal. The most critical step is fixing the underlying humidity or leak issue; otherwise, the mold will return. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a post-remediation verification test to confirm the space is truly clean.
