Black mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has had these black speckles for a couple of months now, and the musty smell is really strong whenever we open the door. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the issue might be worse inside the walls since it’s an exterior wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or should I just call a professional company for an assessment, and what’s a rough estimate for a small job like this in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and likely a hidden moisture source. The strong musty odor and location on an exterior wall are significant red flags. Exterior walls in Jumeirah villas are prone to thermal bridging and condensation issues due to the constant cycling of air conditioning, which can create a perfect, hidden environment for mold within the wall cavity.
Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is a reactive biocide that is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it does not kill the root system (hyphae). It can also exacerbate the problem by releasing harmful chlorinated compounds into the air and adding moisture. A dehumidifier is an excellent tool for prevention but is ineffective at addressing an existing, established colony, especially one potentially inside a wall. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. Our standard process involves a visual assessment, moisture mapping with thermal imaging and penetrating probes, and air/surface sampling to identify the species and spore concentration. This is crucial to determine the full extent of the infestation and the appropriate remediation protocol. For a master bedroom closet, remediation costs can vary based on the severity found. For a contained area, you could be looking at a range of approximately AED 1,500 to AED 4,500 for a complete professional remediation, which includes containment, air scrubbing, removal of contaminated materials, and hygienization of the area. Given the potential health risks and property damage, I advise against a DIY approach.
