Black mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Mirdif villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It appeared after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse, but I’m not sure if it’s something I can clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly. What’s the best way to handle a mold problem like this in Dubai?

That black patch is a classic sign of condensation buildup, especially after a humid spell. Dubai's high humidity, combined with year-round AC creating temperature differentials, causes moisture to accumulate in poorly ventilated corners like closets.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Don't use bleach; it's mostly water and can feed the mold deeper into porous surfaces. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by improving air circulation—leave the closet door ajar or use a moisture absorber.

However, given its location behind items and your worsening allergies, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the surface; the root cause could be a hidden leak in the wall or under the floor. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.

In Dubai, remediation companies should follow international standards like the IICRC S520. The key is to hire a science-driven service that provides verifiable before-and-after data from an accredited lab, not just a visible clean-up. For a villa in Mirdif, getting a full assessment will give you peace of mind that the issue is resolved at its source.
