Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY clean or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy patches spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s definitely gotten worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I'm worried about the health of my family and the damage to the wall. Should I just try to clean this myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional, and what’s the typical cost for a room this size in Dubai?

Black mold spreading behind a wardrobe in a Jumeirah villa is a serious concern due to both potential health risks and structural damage. The high humidity we experience here, especially during summer and in poorly ventilated spaces like behind furniture, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. A professional inspection is strongly recommended for a patch that is actively spreading.

Bleach is not a recommended solution. It only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause—the moisture—nor does it kill the mold's root structure (hyphae) within porous materials like drywall or plaster. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home.

For a confirmed case of persistent black mold, professional remediation is the safest course. The process involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved, non-bleach biocides. Crucially, a certified professional will also identify and rectify the source of moisture, which could be condensation from an AC unit, a hidden pipe leak, or moisture wicking through the wall from outside.

Costs for a single room can vary significantly based on the extent of the infestation within the wall cavity and the required repairs. In Dubai, you can expect a proper remediation project for a room of that size to be a significant investment, not a minor service charge. Always request a detailed scope of work and ensure the company provides before-and-after lab testing to verify the mold count has been returned to safe, ambient levels.
