Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s definitely worse since the humid weather started, and we’re worried about our kids' health. Is this something we can tackle ourselves with bleach and a dehumidifier, or should we just call a professional company for an assessment? What’s the typical price range for mold remediation for a single room here?

Based on your description of a spreading black mold colony behind a wardrobe in a Jumeirah Park villa, my professional recommendation is to immediately cease any DIY attempts and schedule a professional inspection. The combination of a concealed location, ongoing spread (especially exacerbated by our current high humidity), and the presence of children makes this a serious case requiring expert assessment.

Applying bleach is a common but critically flawed approach. It only bleaches the surface pigmentation and does not kill the root system (hyphae) within the building material. Furthermore, bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold and cause it to regrow more vigorously. A dehumidifier is an excellent preventive tool but is ineffective at addressing an existing, established infestation.

In Dubai, the climate is the primary driver. Year-round AC use creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation in hidden spaces like behind furniture. This constant moisture, combined with the high ambient humidity, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. The remediation process is not just about cleaning the visible spot; it involves identifying and correcting the source of moisture, isolating the contaminated area to prevent cross-contamination, removing the affected materials correctly, and employing professional-grade antimicrobials and air scrubbing technology.

For a single room remediation, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required containment procedures, prices in the UAE can typically range from AED 2,500 to AED 7,000. A proper inspection will provide an accurate scope of work and quote.
