Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has felt super humid since the heavy rains a few weeks ago. I was just getting winter clothes out of the upstairs bedroom cupboard and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on a couple of leather handbags. The room has that damp earth smell now. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai straight away?

Based on your description of the black, fuzzy growth and the distinct damp earth smell in your Mirdif villa, this is a clear indication of active mold colonization. The recent heavy rains are a classic trigger in Dubai, as they can lead to water intrusion in villas and, when combined with our high ambient humidity and year-round AC use, create a perfect environment for mold growth on porous materials like drywall and leather.

For a situation of this extent, DIY cleaning is not advisable and can be hazardous. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing potential health risks from inhalation. Furthermore, surface cleaning with household bleach or vinegar is ineffective on porous materials; the mold hyphae (roots) penetrate deep into the wall and the leather, meaning it will almost certainly regrow. Proper remediation requires the source of moisture to be identified and resolved, the affected materials to be assessed for salvageability, and the area to be contained and treated using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents.

As a certified professional, I strongly recommend you call a professional company immediately. In the UAE, reputable firms adhere to strict standards like the Abu Dhabi EHSMS and Dubai Municipality guidelines for environmental health and safety. We offer a comprehensive service that includes a detailed inspection with moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the full scope of the problem, followed by safe, contained remediation.
