Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional cleaning?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s been worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to handle this properly in Dubai – should I call a professional cleaning company or is there a specific product I can use myself first?

That black spot pattern behind the headboard is a classic sign of a condensation issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity. The wall is likely colder due to the AC, and moisture from the air condenses there, creating a perfect environment for mold.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the headboard to allow the wall to dry completely. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into the porous surface. After cleaning, the area must stay completely dry to prevent immediate regrowth. However, given the location—a bedroom where you spend hours breathing the air—and the fact it's recurring, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold may have penetrated the gypsum board or insulation behind it. A proper assessment includes using a moisture meter to find the exact source of the dampness, which is critical for a permanent fix. They can also identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus can be more problematic for indoor air quality. In villas, this is frequently due to a minor leak in an external wall or a thermal bridge, not just condensation. Simply cleaning it without fixing the underlying moisture problem means it will almost certainly return, especially during the next humid season. A reputable company will provide a protocol that includes source identification, containment during remediation to prevent spore spread, and verification through post-remediation testing to confirm the environment is back to a normal fungal ecology. |
