Black mold in Dubai villa wardrobe: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom wardrobe on the exterior wall. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading because my allergies have been acting up. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray myself, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Good question, and a very common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in older areas like Jumeirah. That specific location—the back of a wardrobe on an exterior wall—is a classic hotspot. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat and humidity condense on the cooler interior surface, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.

While a small, isolated patch might be tempting to tackle with a DIY solution like vinegar or baking soda, I strongly advise against it for a few key reasons. First, what you see on the surface is often just the "fruit" of the mold; the actual root structure (hyphae) can penetrate deep into the plasterboard or even the concrete block behind it. Surface cleaning will remove the visible stain but the mold will almost certainly return. Second, disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, exacerbating your allergy symptoms and potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your bedroom.

Given the humidity we're experiencing and your allergic reaction, this warrants a professional assessment. In the UAE, proper remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about identifying and correcting the source of the moisture—be it inadequate insulation, a minor plumbing leak, or insufficient ventilation—to prevent recurrence.

Our recommendation is to get a certified mold inspector to conduct a survey. They'll use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source and take air/surface samples to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This data is crucial for a proper remediation plan that follows IICRC standards. For a proper diagnosis and a permanent solution, it's best to call in the pros.
