Black mold in humid closet: clean and prevent permanently?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outer wall has started getting these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. We're in an older building in Jumeirah, and I only noticed it after the recent humidity spike. I’m worried it’s spreading to the walls behind the clothes. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black mold on leather in a humid closet is a strong indicator of a condensation and moisture issue, very common in older Jumeirah buildings. The wall behind is likely already affected. Do not just clean the visible spots; the hidden mold will continue to spread.

First, empty the closet. For the leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute solution of white vinegar or a leather-safe disinfectant, then dry them completely in a well-ventilated area away from the mold source. For the walls and surfaces, a solution of detergent and water can remove surface growth, but this is only a temporary measure.

The permanent solution requires addressing the root cause: the humidity differential between the air-conditioned room and the warmer, stagnant air trapped in the closet on an outer wall. This creates constant condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar, install louvered doors, or place a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure your room’s AC is serviced and draining properly, as a faulty unit can contribute to overall humidity.

Given the location and the fact it’s on an outer wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended to assess the wall cavity for hidden growth. In the UAE, remediation standards require containing the affected area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home during cleaning, which is difficult to achieve on your own. A proper assessment will identify the moisture source and the full extent of the contamination for a targeted, permanent fix.
