Black mold in humid villa bedroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this weird damp smell since the weather started getting really humid a couple of months ago, and now I'm seeing small black spots forming in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

Black spots returning after cleaning indicate active growth, which is common in Dubai's high humidity. The wall-ceiling junction is a classic trouble spot for condensation as cool indoor air meets warmer surfaces.
For small areas under 1 square meter, you can attempt DIY. Use a microfiber cloth with a solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it doesn't kill roots). Dry the area completely with a fan afterward. However, if it returns quickly, the moisture source isn't addressed. In villas, this often stems from a small roof leak, thermal bridging, or insufficient insulation—common in older Jumeirah constructions. Given the persistent damp smell and recurrence, a professional inspection is advisable. They identify the exact moisture source using thermal imaging and moisture meters, which is critical for a permanent fix. Remediation involves containment to prevent spores spreading to other rooms, safe removal of affected materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials. For health safety, especially with children, I'd recommend testing to identify the species. While most mould here is allergenic, certain types like Aspergillus can proliferate in AC systems and villas. A certified company with its own microbiology lab can provide a species-level report, which is valuable for understanding health risks and verifying cleanup effectiveness. |
