Black mold in Jumeirah apartment: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been so humid lately despite the AC running constantly. I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage cupboard and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on a few leather bags and the wall behind them. I’m worried it’s black mold and I’m not sure if I can clean it myself with bleach or if I need to call a professional company to handle it safely.

That black, fuzzy growth is likely mold, and in JLT's high humidity, it's a common issue. Leather and the porous wall behind it are prime food sources.
For the leather bags, you can attempt a careful DIY clean. Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with a mix of soap and water or a dedicated leather cleaner, then dry the item completely in a well-ventilated area away from the damp cupboard. Do not use bleach, as it can damage the material and its fumes are hazardous indoors. For the wall, cleaning the surface is not enough. The mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates porous surfaces like drywall and paint. Wiping it often just disperses spores and the mold regrows quickly. In an apartment, you must also identify and address the moisture source. The constant AC use can create significant condensation if units are not draining properly or are undersized for the humidity load. The enclosed storage cupboard likely had no air circulation, creating a perfect micro-climate for mold. Given the location on a wall and the climate conditions, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the condensation source and air sampling to identify the mold type. Some species, like Stachybotrys (true "black mold"), require more stringent containment during removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. Professionals follow DM and DHA guidelines for safe remediation, which involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, and removing contaminated porous materials. For a confirmed case in wall material, the affected section often needs to be cut out and replaced. Start by moving all items out of the cupboard, improving air circulation with a fan, and addressing any visible condensation. For a permanent solution, have the AC system checked for proper drainage and cooling capacity. |
