Black mold in Jumeirah apartment: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been getting worse over the last few weeks since the weather got more humid. I’m worried about my family breathing it in, but I have no idea what this kind of repair should cost here. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company?

Black mold on interior walls from an AC leak in JVC is a common issue due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The damp drywall and dust behind the wardrobe create an ideal environment for growth.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted if the moisture source is completely fixed first. Wear an N95 mask, seal the area, and clean with a detergent solution, not just bleach, which doesn't prevent regrowth. However, if the leak has soaked into the wall or the area is larger, DIY is not advised. You risk spreading spores and missing hidden growth within the wall cavity. Given the mold has been growing for weeks and is behind furniture, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters to find the full extent of the water damage, which is often far greater than the visible stain. Remediation involves removing and replacing the affected drywall, not just surface cleaning, to prevent recurrence and ensure structural integrity. The cost for professional remediation varies significantly. It is not based on a flat fee but on the scope of water damage, the area of wall and insulation affected, and whether the AC unit and ductwork also require cleaning. Always request a detailed assessment and a scope of work that includes post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is fully resolved. |
