Black mold in Jumeirah bathroom: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling above the shower. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather became more humid last month. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray, but it came back a couple of weeks later.
Is there a specific type of professional in Dubai I should call for a permanent fix, or is this something I can handle myself with a better product?

The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from showers meeting cool AC-chilled surfaces. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the moisture source or kill the root structure (hyphae) within porous materials like ceiling paint or grout.
For a small, recurring patch, you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) and scrub the area. Crucially, you must identify and rectify the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's extractor fan is functioning properly and runs for at least 30 minutes after each shower. Wipe down wet surfaces and check for poor silicone sealing around the shower that allows steam into the wall cavity. If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated the ceiling board, or returns quickly after a thorough DIY cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended. In Dubai, look for a certified indoor environmental professional or a mould remediation company that uses a moisture meter to find hidden dampness and provides before-and-after lab testing to verify clearance. A permanent fix requires solving the condensation issue, which often involves improving ventilation—a common challenge in sealed, AC-dependent apartments. |
