Black mold in kids' room: clean safely or see doctor?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom, behind the wardrobe. We live in an older villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried the high humidity is making it worse, especially after last week’s humidity spike. What is the safest way to clean this myself to prevent it from coming back, and should I be taking them to a doctor?

The black mold you've found is likely contributing to the nighttime coughing, as mold spores are a common irritant. In Dubai's high humidity, especially after recent spikes, mold can grow quickly in hidden areas with poor airflow.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a mild detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can leave moisture behind. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan. To prevent recurrence, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, use a dehumidifier in the room, and ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as clogged drain lines are a primary cause of indoor humidity. Given the location in a child's bedroom and the existing respiratory symptoms, it is advisable to consult a doctor. They can assess if the irritation is allergic or requires treatment. For a villa in Al Barsha, the mold behind the wardrobe may be a symptom of a wider humidity issue in the building envelope. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you notice a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources and assess the full extent. |
