Black mold in kids' room: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. I finally moved their bunk beds to clean behind them and found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff spreading from the corner of the wall onto the baseboard. I’m worried about their health, but I’m also not sure if this is something I can just clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly?

Given Dubai's high humidity and reliance on AC, that damp smell and visible growth are significant red flags. The fuzzy black and green patch indicates active growth, likely fueled by condensation or a hidden moisture source behind the wall, common in villas here.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a careful DIY clean with a microfiber cloth and detergent solution can be attempted. However, bleach is not recommended; it is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can release harmful fumes. Crucially, DIY is only for the visible surface and does not address the root moisture problem or any hidden contamination inside the wall cavity.

With this being a child's bedroom and the growth spreading from the wall-baseboard junction, a professional inspection is strongly advised. This suggests a potential leak or severe condensation issue that DIY cannot diagnose. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior. The fuzzy texture also means spores are already airborne, which standard cleaning will not contain, risking further spread.

A proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing contaminated porous materials like baseboards or drywall sections. The final step should always be a post-remediation verification test to confirm the spore count has returned to acceptable indoor levels, ensuring your children's room is truly safe.
