Black mold in kids' room: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks, and I just found what looks like black mold in the corners of their bedroom closet. It’s a wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. The dehumidifier runs constantly, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a child's bedroom, especially with ongoing coughing, warrants a professional assessment. The combination of symptoms and visible growth means it's likely more extensive than what you can see. In Dubai's climate, that external villa wall is a prime spot for condensation issues, which a dehumidifier alone often can't resolve if there's a persistent moisture source.

DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. It can aggravate the spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's symptoms, and it only addresses the surface discoloration, not the root cause or the hyphae (roots) within the material. For porous surfaces like drywall, effective remediation is nearly impossible without targeted techniques.

The required approach is to first identify and fix the moisture intrusion, likely condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot external wall. A professional inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source. Remediation then involves containment of the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing to capture spores, and safe removal of affected materials.

Given the health concerns and the construction specifics of UAE villas, a professional service is the prudent choice. Look for a provider that follows IICRC standards and can provide before-and-after lab air sample results to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level.
