Black mold in kids' room: health risks and doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and their allergies are going crazy, especially in their bedroom. I finally pulled their bed away from the wall and found a patch of black mold behind it, which must have been growing since the humidity spiked. I'm really worried about them sleeping in there every night. What are the specific health risks for children exposed to this, and should I take them to a doctor right away?

Black mold exposure in children can cause persistent respiratory issues like the coughing you described, along with nasal congestion, wheezing, and skin or eye irritation. The risk is higher for children due to their developing respiratory systems and because they often play on floors where mold spores settle.

Given the symptoms have lasted a month, a doctor's visit is recommended to manage their allergies and rule out other causes. A pediatrician can assess if the mold exposure has triggered asthma or a sinus infection. In Dubai's climate, indoor mold is a common allergy trigger due to high humidity and AC use, which can create condensation on walls.

Move the children to another room immediately and address the moisture source. That patch likely indicates a humidity problem, possibly from AC condensation or a minor leak. For a confirmed black mold situation, especially with health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the exact species and the extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than the visible patch. Remediation should be handled by a certified company to ensure spores aren't spread throughout the home during cleanup.
