Black mold in kids' room: remove safely or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my kids' bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, and now my youngest has been having a runny nose and a cough that won't go away. I'm really worried it's making them sick. What's the best way to get rid of it safely without the spores spreading everywhere, and should I call a professional company here in Dubai to test it first?

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, hidden mold growth behind furniture is common. For a small patch (under one square foot) found in a closet, you can handle it safely with precautions. However, since your child is showing persistent respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the species and the full extent of the growth, which is often wider than the visible patch.

To clean the small area yourself, first isolate the space. Keep the closet door closed and the room's AC off. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Lightly mist the mold patch with water from a spray bottle to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe dry completely. Dispose of all cleaning materials in a sealed bag. Never use bleach, as it can damage porous materials and doesn't prevent regrowth.

The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In a closet corner, this is often condensation from an AC supply vent or a cold wall. Improving air circulation in that area is essential to prevent it from returning.

Due to the health symptoms present, engaging a company with a certified indoor environmental professional to conduct a lab analysis is the most prudent path. They can perform air and surface sampling to confirm the mold type and check for hidden proliferation inside the wall or under flooring. This scientific approach provides clarity on the actual risk level and ensures the remediation is complete, not just superficial.
