Black mold in kids' room, what's first inspection step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer holidays, and I'm starting to panic. I've just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of the ceiling in their bedroom, right near the AC vent. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. What's the first step I should take to get a proper mold inspection done?

The first step is to limit exposure. Keep the kids out of that room and avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release spores. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with older building envelopes and constant AC use, this scenario is common. The AC unit itself may be a source of moisture from condensation or a reservoir for spores.

For a proper inspection, engage a professional who uses a borescope to look inside your wall and AC system for hidden growth, which is very likely in this situation. They should also conduct air quality testing to compare spore levels inside that room against an outdoor control sample and another indoor area. This data is crucial.

The goal is to identify the actual extent and type of mold, not just the visible spots. A reputable inspector will provide a detailed report with the findings and a clear remediation protocol, not just a sales pitch for cleaning. In the UAE, look for providers who can explain their methodology and have their own or partner with an accredited microbiology lab to analyze samples, as this moves the process from guesswork to science. This evidence-based approach is vital when health symptoms are involved.
