Black mold in Mirdif bedroom: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our spare bedroom in Mirdif has been closed up for a while, and when I went to get something out of the closet yesterday, I found a bunch of black speckles along the bottom of the wall. We had a few leaks during the heavy rains in March and I’m worried the moisture never fully dried out. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection service to check inside the walls?

Black speckles in a closed-up Mirdif bedroom after the March rains are a classic sign of mould from trapped moisture. The high humidity here, combined with residual dampness in walls, creates an ideal environment for growth.

DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials and does not address the roots within porous drywall. It can also release a large number of spores into the air. For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square meter), a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mould remover and improving ventilation can be sufficient.

However, given the history of leaks and that the growth is on a wall, the moisture source is likely inside. The wall cavity needs to be inspected for residual dampness and hidden colonization, which you cannot assess yourself. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall without unnecessary damage. They can identify the exact species, as some types common in Dubai's climate pose higher health risks than others. For any suspected water damage or growth larger than a square foot, a professional assessment is the safest course to ensure it is resolved completely and to verify the indoor air quality is safe.
