Black mold in our Dubai bedroom causing sickness?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the edges of our bedroom window frames, especially behind the curtains. Since the weather got more humid a few months ago, my husband and I have both had a persistent stuffy nose and sore throats in the mornings that clear up when we leave for work. I'm starting to worry it's connected. Is this likely black mold and what’s the safest way to get it professionally tested and removed in Dubai?

Black speckles on window frames in a humid climate like Dubai are very often a type of mould, and your symptoms are a common reaction to its spores in the air. The persistent morning congestion that clears up when you leave the room strongly suggests an indoor air quality issue, with mould being a primary suspect.

The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer months, leads to significant condensation on cooler surfaces like windows and AC units. This moisture, trapped behind curtains, creates an ideal environment for mould growth. While the term "black mould" is often used for Stachybotrys, many other black-coloured mould species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus are more common and can still cause the allergic symptoms you describe. Only a lab analysis can confirm the specific type.

For testing, do not disturb the growth. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source and take an air or surface sample for a certified microbiology lab. This analysis is crucial; it confirms the species and concentration, determining the appropriate remediation response. In Dubai, reputable companies follow international guidelines like the IICRC S520 for remediation, which includes containment, HEPA filtration, and proper disposal to prevent cross-contamination.

For removal, DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended—it can aggravate the problem by releasing more spores and doesn't address the root moisture issue. Professional remediation will first identify and rectify the cause of the condensation, then safely remove the contaminated materials and clean the area with specialised antimicrobial agents. To prevent recurrence, ensure consistent use of your AC to control humidity, improve air circulation by opening curtains regularly, and consider using a dehumidifier.
