Black mold in shower ceiling: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the ceiling above the shower. I tried scrubbing it with a regular cleaner but it just faded a bit and came back darker a few days later, especially with all this humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product from ACE, or is it time to call in a professional?

The black spots spreading on your shower ceiling are almost certainly mold, a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the constant high humidity and condensation from hot showers meeting cold AC-chilled surfaces. Scrubbing it with a regular cleaner often just disturbs the surface spores, causing it to return stronger.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt a targeted DIY approach. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store like ACE, not bleach. Look for products containing chlorine dioxide or hydrogen peroxide. Scrub thoroughly, but the key is addressing the moisture source. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it’s actually venting air outside. Wipe down wet surfaces and improve air circulation.

Given that it has already returned after cleaning and is actively spreading, this suggests a more established colony. Recurring mold often indicates a deeper issue, like moisture trapped within the ceiling material or a ventilation system that is inadequate for the local climate. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the root cause, assess the extent, and perform remediation that removes the mold at its source, not just its visible appearance. They can also verify if your exhaust fan is performing to Dubai Municipality standards.
