Black mold in shower: clean myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our apartment in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of the shower where the tiles meet the floor. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the constant AC use might be making it worse. Is this the kind of thing I can clean myself with bleach, or should I call the building management to check for a leak?

In Dubai's humidity, shower mold is common and often manageable yourself. The black spots at the tile joint are likely due to condensation and residual moisture, exacerbated by constant AC cycling creating temperature differentials.

For a small area, a solution of one part bleach to four parts water can be effective. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during the process. However, bleach only removes surface discoloration and may not address the root moisture problem or penetrate porous grout.

The decision to call management hinges on two factors. First, if the cleaning is ineffective and the mold quickly returns, it suggests a persistent moisture source, potentially a hidden leak in the plumbing or shower pan seal. Second, inspect the grout. If it is cracked, crumbling, or missing, it allows water to seep into the wall cavity, which requires professional repair by maintenance.

For extensive growth covering over one square meter, or if you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the wall cavity and identify the exact mold species. In many cases, resolving bathroom mold is about improving ventilation by running the exhaust fan longer and regularly wiping down wet surfaces to reduce ambient moisture.
