Black mold in shower corner: call landlord or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been extra humid lately and I think the bathroom’s ventilation isn't strong enough to handle it. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my landlord first or just handling it myself?

For a small patch in your shower, DIY is often effective. Mix one part bleach with four parts water, apply with a spray bottle, let sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear gloves and a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. For persistent growth, a commercial mould remover containing hydrogen peroxide or a dedicated fungicide can be more effective.
In Dubai’s high humidity, especially in Marina with its sea air, ventilation is critical. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a squeegee on walls can significantly reduce the moisture that mould needs to grow. You should notify your landlord about the issue, as it indicates a potential ventilation problem they are responsible for maintaining. Under typical Dubai rental agreements, the landlord is responsible for fixing the underlying cause, such as a faulty extractor fan, while tenants handle minor surface cleaning. If the mould is extensive (covering over one square meter), recurring despite thorough cleaning, or has a musty odour spreading to other rooms, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden moisture or more serious growth. |
