Black mold in shower corner: DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the steam from our showers isn't venting properly. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately?

Small patches of bathroom mold are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a patch in the corner, you can likely handle it yourself.
First, identify the source. The steam from your shower needs to vent outside; if it's just recirculating, the problem will return. Check that your bathroom exhaust fan is actually pulling air and isn't blocked. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. For a small area, wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing and drying thoroughly. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter, has penetrated behind the tiles or ceiling, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture issue. In this case, building maintenance should be notified, as the leak could be from a neighbor's unit or a building pipe. For health concerns, especially with infants or respiratory conditions, a professional inspection can identify the species and recommend targeted remediation. |
