Black mold in shower corner: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black mold spots spreading in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional company for an inspection and proper removal? If professional, what’s a realistic price range I should expect for a standard bathroom in Dubai?

Small black spots in a shower corner are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers meeting cold AC-chilled surfaces. For a small, surface-level area you just noticed, a thorough DIY approach is often sufficient.

Start by addressing the moisture source. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting properly. Wipe down wet walls and corners with a squeegee after use. For cleaning, skip the bleach spray—it only bleaches the colour and doesn't kill the root structure. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover or a paste of distilled white vinegar and baking soda. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, let the solution sit, then rinse thoroughly.

However, if the mould has penetrated porous materials like drywall or ceiling tiles, or if it covers an area larger than a square meter, it's time for a professional assessment. The fact it's spreading from the ceiling corner suggests possible internal condensation within the ceiling void, which is beyond a surface clean. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden dampness and take air or tape-lift samples for lab analysis to confirm the species.

For a standard bathroom remediation, costs are not fixed but depend on the extent of the damage and required containment. Expect a higher investment if the job requires removing and replacing sections of the ceiling or wall to address the root moisture problem, which is a common necessity for a lasting solution in our climate. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that includes post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is resolved.
