Black mold in shower: DIY clean or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black mold spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It’s in the corner that gets no sun and the musty smell is getting worse, especially since the weather has been so humid. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and wondering if this is a job for a one-time deep clean or if I need a full professional remediation service? What’s a reasonable price I should expect to pay for a proper fix?

The black mold in your shower is likely Aspergillus or Cladosporium, both common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from AC use. For a small area (under one square meter) on non-porous surfaces like tile grout, a DIY approach can be effective.

Start by scrubbing the area with a dedicated grout brush and a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (ensure good ventilation). After cleaning, it is critical to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and use a squeegee on the walls to remove standing water. A small dehumidifier or moisture absorber can help in a windowless bathroom.

However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like the grout itself, drywall behind tiles, or the silicone sealant, it will almost certainly return. A persistent musty odor is a strong indicator of hidden moisture and deeper growth. In older Bur Dubai buildings, hidden leaks from adjacent pipes are also a common culprit.

Professional remediation is recommended if the area is large, the mold returns after multiple cleanings, or the odor persists. They will identify the moisture source, often using moisture meters, and remove contaminated materials properly. For a proper fix, expect to pay more for a service that includes a diagnostic inspection and post-remediation verification, as this addresses the root cause rather than just the visible symptom.
